Anderson University houses students in a dormitory near the crosswalk along Boulevard road in Anderson, and on July 23, a second dormitory is expected to be complete. A third dormitory, where 313 Boulevard scheduled for demolition Friday, was approved by the city of Anderson for construction.

The investigation into the death of Elizabeth Ayers continued Monday. The Pendleton High School freshman was struck and killed by a pickup truck as she crossed Five Forks Road Saturday evening.

The Clemson mens basketball team was selected by the NCAA Tournament as a seventh seed to play in Buffalo, N.Y. against tenth seed Missouri. Players, fans, coaches, and school representatives cheered as the Tigers team was announced on CBS television after nearly 30 minutes.

David Trado, 51, of Anderson came to the Anderson Area YMCA for one reason, to save his life. Weighing in at 416 pounds and advice from his doctor to lose weight or face possible health decline, he brought the snapshot of himself with his walker for the next two years. Now at just over 200 pounds, he has become a role model for others working out.

  • Haywood “Gil” Bateman works out on a treadmill at the Anderson Recreation Center. Bateman, who is a diabetic, said that after skipping a couple days of exercise, he saw a small increase in his blood sugar levels.
  • Metformin is one of a few drugs prescribed to patients with diabetes to help manage the disease.
  • Haywood 'Gil' Bateman and his wife Diann count carbohydrates. A salad, spaghetti and dessert contain about 75 grams of carbohydrates, which the couple said is acceptable for one meal.
  • A bag of cookies in Haywood 'Gil' Bateman's kitchen is labeled to have 140 calories and 22 carbohydrates per 8 cookies.
  • Haywood “Gil” Bateman needs to pay special attention to food labels because he must count his carbohydrate intake for each meal to help manage his diabetes.

Prescription drugs can be ineffective without proper monitoring and making lifesytle changes.

The You Are Not Forgotten campaign, organized by Teufelshunde USMC Motorcycle Club member Kit Sanders, held riding events, fundraisers, and collected money to help pay for the Silver Center at the Richard M. Campbell Veterans Nursing Home in Anderson. The center, named after the late U.S. Air Force veteran Charles Silver, is a large carport which holds a activity bus for the veterans home. The Anderson County Young Marines presented the colors, and motorcycle clubs Confederate MC, Hardwood Cruisers of Anderson and Donalds, and Hard Knox MC were thanked for their contributions supporting veterans.

The fifth International Fair at Crescent High School included 22 countries, each displayed by groups of students. Each group researched the country, bringing examples of each culture to their booth.

  • More than 33,000 vehicles pass over the Brushy Creek Bridge per day on Interstate 85 southbound in Anderson County near mile marker 37. According to a AAA Carolinas study, the bridge meets 65 percent of federal safety standards for bridges. The South Carolina Department of Transportation maintains the bridge.
