AnMed again ranked as top hospital

— Officials with HealthGrades have announced that AnMed Health Medical Center is at the top of hospitals in South Carolina when it comes to clinical excellence and patient safety.

Todd Vanfossen, spokesman for HealthGrades, said Friday that AnMed has “strong clinical outcomes across the board for patients.”

AnMed is the only South Carolina hospital recognized by HealthGrades for clinical excellence in 2008.

No other South Carolina hospital were listed for clinical excellence in both 2006 and 2007, according to the website for HealthGrades.

AnMed, along with four other hospitals, including Greenville Hospital System and the Medical College of South Carolina, were listed as top facilities under the category of patient safety.

AnMed also made the top grade in 2007 for patient safety. In 2006, Oconee Memorial Hospital, now Oconee Medical Center, was tops in patient safety, according to HealthGrades.

But the “evaluation of quality is in its infancy,” according to this week's report on health care by HealthGrades.

The failure to “translate knowledge to action will result in thousands of preventable deaths,” the report states in its conclusion.

The announcement, which includes data on 26 categories including cardiology, pulmonary, critical care and gastrointestinal procedures, is based on data gathered by HealthGrades from 2005 to 2007, including 5,000 hospitals and 700,000 physicians across the nation, HealthGrades reports.

The “11th Annual HealthGrades Hospital Quality in America Study” provides an analysis of the data by state, citing a reduction in preventable death by 54 percent if hospitals make improvements to procedures and diagnoses of heart and respiratory failure, sepsis and pneumonia.

And the study cites its role in keeping tabs on health care costs.

“With differences among hospitals, informed choices with transparent, objective data are essential,” the report states.

“Americans should be receiving much greater value for the care they currently obtain.”

i dont know how... they obviously dont talk to the patiets there.. or the patients family. My father in law has been in here for almost a month... with them playing guessing game... i've got a friend who's father has been in there since april basically.. they've stopped his heart twice with to much anaestetics cause they give him to much and dont know what they are doing.. The nurses dont care about the patients.. at all.. most of them.
I think these awards are being bought.

OMG, top hospital??!! Compared to what, a butcher shop!! AnMed is a JOKE!

This has to be a JOKE! Somebody must have paid off someone. I smell a Meadors.

Maybe they belong to the same awards club as Joey..????

Top award for Runway lights and high bills.

If they are the top who is the bottom.

You all are basing your opinions of the WHOLE hospital on maybe one or 2 experiences. I know that I work my butt off taking care of my patients to the best of my ability and have NEVER had a complaint. People like you who make stupid comments like the ones you have made piss me off because I know that I am a great nurse and care about ALL of my patients. Most of my co-workers are awesome nurses as well. Of course you have a few bad apples, but that's everywhere, not just Anmed.

Gb33z, I think you owe 90% of the nurses at Anmed an apology because MOST of us DO care about our patients...even though we have to deal with family members like you.

I have to say that after growing up in Anderson and living in Washington,DC and now Atlanta, I always thought AnMed was a Small town JOKE of a Place. But my Father was in Intensive Care there for 8 days this Summer and I was VERY Impressed both with the Hospital Itself which has been Gutted and Redone and with ALL the Nurses we interacted with during that time. I was Proud of my Hometown for prob. the 1st time in my Life!

I have to admit the nurses there always treated me good and was very professional. But the operating room I was last in, was in need of a lot of repairs, although the surgical staff was great. My dad before he died, they came to his room and told him, his insurance was up and he had to leave, we knew he was not ready or able, as he stood up to try to put his pants on blood just ran down his leg. I went and got the head nurse and showed her and let them know that our attorney would be involved. Boy they got their stuff straight right quick. But I still think #1 is a joke. Another time my dad was in and the man next to him was just told that he had terminal cancer and he got irritated with a few, and a nurse asked me if I was reading scripture and I said yes ,She asked if I would talk to him. #1 they don't even have freedom of speech, that comes down from people like Meadors and others on the Board. #1 I don't think so, and I am not speaking of the nurses and the workers, I'm talking about the building and the policies, and the prices. After I had surgery 2 pills for a headache cost $120.00. Why is Anmed not paying Taxes as they should?

Try attacking the insurance companies for the high costs. Discuss your care with the doctors. The patients and the families have a responsibility, too. The rest of us are there doing our jobs and trying to help people. Most of us don't make the big bucks the doctors do. We are paying our taxes just like everyone else. Look into socialized medicine and you will find our situation is a whole lot better. Try waiting a year for health care when you have cancer or another life threatening disease. If you think the nurses wanted a $$$ statue out front you are wrong. If you don't like how things are then get out there and personally do something about it. We shouldn't have to pay for the illegal alien's and immigrant's health care. We shouldn't have to pay for the health care of those that don't want to work. Think about that before you blame those of us that are working. Working for you. Try doing our job within the policies we have to follow, while dealing with the bureaucrats and Joint Commission and DHEC. By the way, AnMed is a non-profit, which is why they don't pay taxes. That's standard with hospitals.

You can please some of the people some of the time, but you can't please most people any of the time. To the people that are so unhappy with AnMed, try G'ville, Gosh, they have one on every corner seems like and keep right on building them, maybe one of those will please some of you. NO, didn't think so. I'm just glad they are there and willing to help. It's takes a special kind of person to be a Nurse. God bless them all!

Thanks guys! I am glad there are people who appreciate the care that nurses give them. We honestly do the best we can, and a lot of the time we are short staffed. It just gets everyone down and makes us feel bad when people make comments like the first one posted on here.

I love what I do, and I treat all of my patients how I would want to be treated.

People don't seem to understand that clinical excellence is based on many things. The nurses have nothing to do with the costs of pills and such. The insurance companies raise the costs for everyone by not paying for services rendered. The nurses are doing the best they can with what they are given. The nurses I work with are caring and hard working. Patients and families need to understand that they have a responsibility to their care, too. Ask questions and be there. Too many times those that can't speak for themselves are left in the hospital with no family, alone for days. When a floor is short-staffed it affects patient care. The nurses don't ask to work in those conditions, but they stick it out. Family could be a great help if they try. Don't be the problem, be the solution.

I've only had a hospital stay twice in my life, and they were both for the births of my children. Each time, my experience with AnMen was wonderful! I had excellent care, and the whole staff was attentive to my needs. When my paternal grandmother and maternal grandfather were in the hospital, I truly believe they were well taken care of. Congratulations to AnMed for your achievement!

I am a long time employee of Anmed health and have also been a patient there. I know that there are some staff that are not as concerned as others. As in any nursing environment or any other line of work, there are some people that just want to make 8 hours and go home. The administration is currently "weeding out" employees's that are deemed unfit. I have witnessed this alot recently and I think it will continue. There are bad apples in every bunch but I truly think Anmed doe's it's best to a have kind, caring staff. As for me being a patient, the staff really took excellent care of me. I have no complaints.

Anmed is way under staffed. Be it nurses, doctors, to EVS workers. Where I work they have 4 people on the EVS staff on a shift, to cover the busy labor and delivery, and mom and babies, and pediatrics. They work their tales off trying to get the rooms clean and ready, fast. But, they also, have to do a good job in these rooms. I will be scared if I ever have to be admitted to the hospital. This area is so poor, not many doctors want to come here. So, hey, if they are good in someones eyes, so be it. But, they do need help in every department. They are lacking.

I had one parent at AnMed 4 times last year. The way my parent was acting, I have no idea how the nurses put up with some of the patients! There is no way I could have handled my own parent. Thank you AnMed for the hard work you do that doesn't get the praise that you deserve many times. Especially when patients have memory issues, it takes a lot of patience that people like myself are not cut out for the job. If you have a good nurse, stop to thank her/him the next time you have the opportunity.
