Honea Path man charged with child neglect, ill treatment of an animal

— Honea Path police officers have arrested a 47-year-old resident and charged him with neglect of a minor and one count of the ill treatment of an animal.

William Skovian of 707 N. Main Street in Honea Path was arrested Wednesday, according to records at the Anderson County Detention Center.

Honea Path Police Lt. Shawn Boseman said Skovian was living in “very filthy conditions” with a 3-year-old boy, 45 cats, 3 dogs and a pet squirrel.

So far, police have recovered 30 cats, including four that were dead, three dogs and a squirrel, Boseman said.

“We believe 15 (cats) are still at large,” the officer said.

The relationship between Skovian and the child, who is in the custody of Anderson County Social Services, was not immediately known.

In spite of four dead animals, Boseman said Skovian only faces one count of animal cruelty.

“He loves animals and was trying to keep them all,” said Boseman, who indicated that police responded after neighbors complained about odors that had increased over several weeks.

Feces was all through the house, which was also infested with fleas, Boseman said.

What is going on in Honea Path? Shootings, robberies, dead cats?

This is no longer the peaceful little town with a big heart that i grew up in.

I am an animal lover myself but, that's way too many animals, especially in one house with a child! What my sister and I do(we are both animal lovers)is donate to the animal shelter. Even if we don't have the extra money, we will put our shredded paper together in a large trash bag and I will take it to the shelter. They greatly appreciate it because the paper makes for great bedding for the animals!

First, take care of the child. Now, is not the time to have a million pets. I love animals. But, if I cannot take care of them, I will take them to a shelter, where they may have a chance at adoption, then, sadly if not, at least a humane end. Leaving them by themselves is not the way an animal lover acts. Sorry. I say toss the book at him. But, this hick county won't do anything. Anderson county is not a very animal friendly place.
