WILLIAMSTON Williamston’s three mayoral candidates debated the issues before an emotionally charged crowd Thursday night at the Williamston Municipal Center.
The Williamston Journal sponsored the debate. Incumbent Mayor Phillip Clardy, who is seeking his third consecutive term in office, and fellow candidates Otis Scott and Carthel “Coach” Crout answered questions on topics ranging from the economy to town unity, honesty, and fiscal responsibility.
The election comes at a time when many of Williamston’s residents are divided about what direction their town should take in the next four years.
“I’d like to see more openness and unity in our town’s government,” said Vicki Galloway, who owns a home in the Shorebrook area of Williamston.
“I love Williamston. Williamston is my hometown, and I’m proud of it. I’m not looking for a date in the future when I’ll start being proud. I’m proud now,” Clardy said when asked about his vision for the future.
Scott, who serves on the Williamston Town Council, cited his memories of a more harmonious time as central to his desire to be mayor.
“In 69 years of living here, I can recall better times than what we have today. I’ve got a vision for this town, and with your help I think we can come together and achieve it,” Scott said to the roughly 100 citizens in attendance Thursday.
Crout, also a Town Council member, said unity was at the heart of his message for Williamston’s residents.
“I will provide leadership to the whole town, not just a particular section,” he said.
The mayoral election will take place during the Nov. 4 general election.

after the debate last nite in williamston,it is clear that mayor clardy deserves to be reelected
for another term,i know it has been a rough last 4 year's, we all learn from our mistake's so that we can do better in the future. tks
Thats just what we dont need in this town more mistakes. We have already learned all we need. Higher water bills thats all the leasons we need. Time for a change time for someone new. We dont neeed to learn anything else we all own the t-shirt I dont want a new one
i want my water bill back to what it used to be. vote clardy out
The biggest problem Williamston has is a greedy mayor and council. They are the highest paid in the state of South Carolina for one of the smallest towns in S.C.
The current council should vote for a 50% pay cut for all now.
I agree hogriderflstc the water bill is crazy. Compare ours to Big Creek water and it takes a customer from there 3 months to equal our one month bill. CRAZY
i wonder how many of you attend the town meetings to find out why our water bills are so high, the mayor and council has nothing to do with it, its the laws we have to put up with.
oh no they control it there are the ones that pass those laws
