I must put my 2 cents worth in here. I grew up in Tampa, and was in Jr. High around the time when they "desegregated" the schools/children- in the 70's.
Let me tell you, those times were as bad- if not worse, as Anderson is now. Not only was I robbed and beaten
nearly daily in school... there was hash, marijuana, THC, Quaalude's and speed to be had in every corridor. There was rape and violence at every turn
and gezzz...go figure I went to a "good school"
Much like our own TL Hanna.
So don't throw out that old "music" crutch. The bullies I encountered listened to Tony Orlando for Christs sake.
I agree with Andrew Hammet-the media has brought all of this to the forefront and in our faces.

Well, they have done that to me also. I just pulled my 357 Smith and Wesson outta my smokin' Dooney & Bourke bag and shouted "BANG BANG" back with a huge grin on my face ...I can still smell the aroma of burning rubber.

I pray for the family of this young man. As for the gate being broken, Big Daddy Warbucks (The owners of the complex) are prolly to darn CHEAP to provide the $$ to replace it. I tried and begged for surveillance cameras to be installed in a large apartment complex I previously managed here in Anderson (HATED that job btw) To no avail. Even with police patrol I'd hired for nights/weekends, the vandalism, drug dealing and attacks only halted
while they were there-then resumed 10 fold after they left. No, a gate will not deter this violence.
I evicted trouble makers/dealers only to receive death threats, that's when I threw my hands up and
found another career. I believe the only deterrant (sp?) would be cameras.
