On Playing the bigger-is-better game can be dangerous for churches

mj1938...I guess I would say that if a member in good standing of a church did not have access to financial information that he or she feels they need, that person may want to consider finding another church. On the other hand, I don't think just any schmuck should have the ability to walk into a church or other organization / place of business and start demanding to know what people make. If that organization is receiving tax dollars for some program, then we, the public, would have the right to have access to some of the info, but I don't think this is the case here.

I don't begrudge a minister, or anybody else, the amount of money they make. 8,000 or so people seem to think Noble's doing a good enough job to warrant a 10% tithe to his ministry- that's their business. That said, I would hope that NewSpring has proper, common sense accounting practices in place to avoid even the appearance of impropriety. Whenever an organization has one person who collects the money , counts the money, budgets the money and spends the money, I think that could end up being a bad situation.

On a side note- I've often wondered what would happen to NewSpring if Noble were, shall we say, no longer available. I know he had a big health scare some time back. Is there a succession plan in place to cover such a situation? [And, since I can't resist my small strain of smart-alek, would they have his funeral at NewSpring, or would that be against policy?] ;-)

Aw...c'mon folks. This is our local boy's Big Chance. Fame and Fortune Await!!! With any luck, he'll be mentioned as one of the "Worst Persons in the World" on Countdown with Keith Olbermann. Then, he can go on FOX and complain to Sean Hannity about how he's being treated unfairly by that "Damned Liberal Media". Maybe mention a few things about Rugged Self Determination (a favorite virtue among many with inherited means). Next thing you know, he's Vice-Presidential Material (especially since Governor Sanford blew his shot at the ring by having a massive brain cramp on CNN a few days ago).

Look, in my opinion it is a little different to attend an individual church with a membership eight times the population of Iva, so NewSpring ain't for me. That said, the NewSpring Church and its members haven't violated MY commandment: "Never Mess With Another Man's Rhubarb". Other than causing minor traffic delays on Sundays, these folks haven't done anything to confront me, so to them I say, "Go in peace, so long as your interests don't conflict with my interests". Now, should these folks start calling the Catholic Church "the Great Satan" or come to my door and say I'm guilty of idol worship (as has happened before), then we will have a problem. One of the many great things about America is that nobody forces us to attend any church (at least until Kevin Bryant becomes President), so if people dig Noble's act, that's great.

If I could ask one thing of my friends who attend NewSpring it would be that one invitation to attend church with you is quite enough, thankyouverymuch. Please refrain from asking again and again and again. I have no problems with people of the Protestant persuasion, but I have chosen my faith and am not interested in exploring yours any further.

So, until they do something out of line, let's cut these folks some slack, shall we?
