Written on Pressure cruise: Traffic increasing on I-85 in Anderson County:

Part of the problem might be that people driving I-85 are often on a long distance drive from north to south or the other way around. After the "excitement" of big city driving in either Atlanta or Charlotte, driving in the less congested areas in northern Georgia through SC may be lulling drivers to sleep, particularly when they are driving late at night.

Written on Bill would make it illegal to text while driving:

in response to ElCid:

Too weak. What we really need is a FEDERAL law that requires all vehicles sold in the US be equipped with an electronic device that will block all telecommunications within the vehicle if the vehicle is moving. Exemptions could be made for law enforcement and emergency vehicles.
Also would need a fine of $500,000 per instance of selling or installing a device to defeat the system.
It can easily be done.
But lawmakers will not do it because, they and their employees and contributors text and talk on cell phones while driving.

That would be going overboard as there is nothing wrong with passengers using a phone or texting while riding in a car. Also, your proposal would stop the use of GPS devices and satellite radio, which are perfectly fine for the most part. If someone is arguing with a GPS as this story relates, then you would probably only move their insanity to arguing with the radio, odometer, seat belts, rear view mirror, etc. because anyone who argues with an inanimate GPS is insane!

Written on House health-care bill has nowhere to go in Senate:

The health bill passed by the House puts a gun to your head and your employers if they don't pay up. That is unconstitutional as the government has no authority to force you to pay for a service other than that contained in the constitution. Also, it set wages for all doctors, forcing surgeons to receive the same wages as GP's. That is also unconstitutional, harking more to socialism and communism than democracy and capitalism.

In the end, the clamoring for health care is the "I want it for free" mentality, and one that our country cannot afford. Your public health option will put your health care into the same category as Abu Grabh, Walter Reed and Earmark politics; in other words about as efficient as the post office with its 13 billion in shortfalls.

Written on Seneca man is fatally shocked near Westminster plant:

Unfortunately, since our government is singularly unable to figure out that metal recycling is rife with stolen metals, this metal theif paid for his own crime with death. How long will it be until state governments restrict metal recycling so that it becomes impractical to steal copper and other metals?

Written on Are there gangs in our schools?:

Adminstrators who say "there are no gang members in my school(s) should be required to attend gang identification training and reassess their views. Not all gang members wear overt colors, and not all behave in a way that brings attention on themselves. That does not mean they are not gang members, any more than the lack of overhead lights automatically makes a car not a police vehicle.

Written on Ramble On: We are all going to miss the missing restaurants in downtown Anderson:

Just tossing in a few clubs or restaurants will not solve the problem, and relying on the clients to resolve the problem is equally futile.

In order for downtown to become an evening destination you only have to look a few miles north to Greenville, where their downtown was hopping the last time I went there. Study, young grasshopper, and you will learn.

Of course if the real power behind downtown does NOT want to see crowds, parties, or young people enjoying their youth, then you are worse off than a salmon trying to make it over Niagara Falls.

Written on Gun control on packed Anderson County Council agenda:

in response to yankee:

"They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." -Benjamin Franklin

Though those words are attributed to Franklin, I suspect that he would see the common sense value of restricting the discharge of a firearm from within so many yards of an occupied dwelling.

As for the quote from Charlton Heston, don't worry, if the Government wants your guns, they will be happy to pry them from your cold dead hands.

They would have to get over all the bodies of the ones who died to take it away from me earlier first.

Written on Ramble On: I can't live without my cell phone:

LOL, I have not carried a non-employer purchased cell phone in years, and I am perfectly happy without it! I get looked at like I was a Luddite of the worst degree, but I never have to be embarrased at inappropriate ringing in theatres and meetings, and I can drive like I wasn't drunk to boot!

That will change sooner or later (sigh!), as they reduce landline service and cell phone become more affordable and powerful. I am not running towards that future, but it is coming nonetheless.

Written on Religion is 'deception and fantasies' passed down through generations:

ohenry35,

Are you proposing that we humans are gods? Or that god is a parasite, living within our bodies? Neither appeal to me greatly. One is patently false, as there are zero human beings who have been perfect, suggesting that we should have faith in an imperfect god. If god is no better than I am, then why should I believe him or her over my own god, which is really just me.

The other is even worse, as I refuse to see something that cannot live outside of someone as a god. Either God is perfect, better than I am, and strong enough to do everything He says, or he is no better than anyone else, just with a major ego problem. Heck, even Stargate SG1 proved that (LOL)!

Written on Religion is 'deception and fantasies' passed down through generations:

Hortus,

I did not say I was torqued, I said that the purpose of the letter was to torque other people off. If your research is unable to parse a sentence properly, it does not surprise me that your research was not successful.

And if you are so concerned about the continual and loud thundering, why are you supporting a clear intention to create a loud and thundering arguement in this forum? If it is peace and quiet you want, stick with the physical paper instead of the electronic version which includes the interactive function.

My certainty in God is a matter of faith, and of my witnessing the effects of that faith in my life and in that of others. I have seen the good brought by that faith in many people, and some of the bad as well. Overall, my life is greatly improved by my faith, which even if there was no God, would be a positive impact on my life. And if the words of the Bible are indeed true, I get multiple benefits, both in this life and the one awaiting me when I pass away from this one. If not, then I still benefit more by my faith than by not having it, even if I end up a pretty pile of dirt in the end.

I echo what Scratch said; if you do not believe in God, why such a concern from you about us that do believe in God? In what way do we threaten you? There are people who believe in almost anything you could imagine, why are you not ranting on those beliefs as well if you do not believe in those beliefs?

As a former non-believer, I realize that some Christians can be a bit of a bore or a pest at times. That did not make it right for me to seek them out to vent my displeasure, any more than it is right for me to vent on non-believers now that I am a believer. Perhaps I am odd that way, but I did come to believe in God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit late in life, so perhaps it also came with a bit of humility.

And I do not think you need to justify anything to me in how you live, unless you break the law. Then it may be something that I would contend with. Otherwise, you WILL have to justify your pursuits, life and decisions one day, one way or another. That is not my burden to bear, all I can do is show as much of what it truly means to be a follower of Christ, as imperfect as that is. It absolutely has made my life better, which I count as a blessing regardless of what comes next. So as I said before; if you are right, I still can do no worse than you in becoming a pile of lovely dirt. If I am right, the differences are both significant and eternal, and neither of us will be lovely piles of dirt, only in different places. Consider that slowly and carefully, and show me where the logic fails.
